Rijiju TablesWaqf (Amendment) Bill Amidst Turmoil in Lok Sabha

Rijiju TablesWaqf (Amendment) Bill Amidst Turmoil in Lok Sabha latest news: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, eliciting fiery debates and protest from the Opposition. The Bill to overhaul management of Waqf properties has been resisted, with a debate of eight hours lined up before the vote.

Rijiju alleged that the Congress-led UPA government had bestowed overriding powers upon Waqf Boards with amendments in 2013, which he said resulted in wrangles over prime government buildings, such as the CGO Complex and Parliament Building. He said that the Congress had transferred 123 buildings to Waqf prior to the 2014 elections, which he called unacceptable.

The Minister underlined that the Bill attempts to correct inefficiencies in the management of Waqf property without encroaching on religious institutions. He pointed out that women, Shia, Bohra, and representatives of non-Muslims have been included in the Waqf Board to bring inclusivity.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah justified the Bill, claiming that it went through careful examination by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and included proposals prior to Cabinet clearance. Shah lambasted the Congress for opposition to the reforms, calling them recalcitrant towards good changes.

The Opposition, though, has expressed misgivings regarding the implications of the Bill, assuring an united opposition during the debate. The voting will decide the fate of the controversial legislation.
