Ennore Power Plant Accident: BHEL to Airlift Bodies of 9 Deceased Workers to Assam Latest News: Nine migrant workers from Assam were killed when a steel arch collapsed at an under-construction site at the Ennore supercritical power station near Ponneri, Chennai, multiple news portals reported.

The incident occurred on Tuesday. Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, told NDTV that a grid fell on them from a height of 45 feet as they were working on a crane. “It’s a coal handling shed, and work was underway to build a cover,” Radhakrishnan is quoted as saying in the report.

Today, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister S. S. Sivashankar, along with the Additional Chief Secretary and Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, visited Stanley Government Hospital to meet the one worker injured in the accident, who is currently undergoing treatment.

The minister and his team also paid their respects to the mortal remains of the nine workers from Assam who died in the tragic incident.

Minister S. S. Sivashankar expressed his condolences over the tragedy.

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to each of the deceased workers' families. Sivashankar also stated that the state government would conduct a thorough review of safety measures at the power project site.

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of the nine workers are kept at Stanley Hospital, Chennai, for post-mortem. After completing the formalities, the remains will be sent to their homes in Assam, according to ANI.

BHEL, which is overseeing the project, has arranged for the transportation of the mortal remains by air to Assam.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, in a post on X regarding the tragedy, stated, “I was deeply saddened to hear the news that nine workers from the state of Assam lost their lives in an accident that occurred during the construction work of the power plant being carried out by #BHEL company in Ennore. I convey my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. I have instructed the Honorable Minister for Electricity, Thiru. @Sivasankar1ss, and the Chairman of  @TANGEDCO_Offcl, Thiru. @Rakri1, to immediately go to the site and carry out relief work. I have also ordered that a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs each be provided to the families of the deceased workers, and that measures be taken to transport their bodies to their home state."

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on X, said, “9 migrant workers from Assam have reportedly succumbed to death after falling down at a construction site at Minjur, Thiruvallur district, today while carrying out construction works for extension of North Chennai Thermal Power Station. 4 of the victims are from Karbi Anglong District and 5 from Hojai District. We are coordinating with authorities in Tamil Nadu to bring back their mortal remains at the earliest.”

Yesterday, around 9:40 PM, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, and authorities are conducting a further probe into the matter.
