ECI Announces Schedule for 17th Vice-Presidential Election of India Latest News: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday announced the schedule for the 17th Vice-Presidential Election of India. In a notice, it stated that the last date for making nominations for the vice-presidential election will be 21 August 2025 (Thursday). The scrutiny of nominations will be done on 22 August 2025 (Friday), and the last date for the withdrawal of candidatures is 25 August 2025 (Monday).
The ECI notice also mentioned that if a poll is necessary, it will be held on 09 September 2025 (Tuesday) from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM. The counting, if required, will also take place on 09 September 2025 (Tuesday).
On 31 July 2025, in a press release, the Commission stated that it had finalized the Electoral College list for the Vice-Presidential Election 2025.
The Election Commission of India is constitutionally mandated (under Article 324) to conduct the election for the office of the Vice-President of India. According to Article 66(1) of the Constitution, the Vice-President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of elected members of the Rajya Sabha, nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and elected members of the Lok Sabha, the press release read.
βIn compliance with Rule 40 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974, the Election Commission is mandated to prepare and maintain an updated list of the members of the Electoral College, along with their latest addresses,β the July 31st press release read.
The ECI also mentioned that the Electoral College list will be available for purchase at the Election Commission counter after the date of notification (to be announced soon).
The former Vice-President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, resigned from the post on 21 July.
