BBMB decided to release 8,500 cusecs of water from Bhakra Dam to Haryana

BBMB decided to release 8,500 cusecs of water from Bhakra Dam to Haryana latest news: The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has decided to release 8,500 cusecs of water from Bhakra Dam to Haryana immediately. The decision was taken in a lengthy meeting of the technical panel of the board, which was presided over by BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi.

Punjab intensly opposed the move, contending that there is not enough water to spare. Punjab was, however, defeated as three BJP-ruled states—Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi—came together to press for the release. Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh remained neutral. Haryana's delegation was headed by Anurag Agarwal, Additional Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department.

BBMB authorities clarified that additional water is being supplied to Haryana on "humanitarian grounds" to meet its drinking and domestic requirements. Haryana has been reeling under severe shortage of water, particularly in Hisar, Sirsa, and Fatehabad districts.

Punjab expressed worries regarding the level of water in its dams, which are currently below normal. Authorities cautioned that opening more gates to Haryana would reduce the water level of Bhakra Dam by 15 feet prior to the monsoon season. Punjab would be forced to use groundwater or Bhakra Dam water for the paddy season.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann blamed the BJP for misusing its authority to divert Punjab's water to Haryana. He said that Haryana had already utilized its share of water and that Punjab has no excess to provide. In spite of Punjab's protest, BBMB resolved to waive some rules to enable the release of the water as a special case.
