Himachal Pradesh Weather Update: Heavy Rains Trigger Disruption and Landslide Concerns

Himachal Pradesh, Shimla Weather Update Latest News Today: Heavy rainfall has continued to lash Himachal Pradesh, particularly affecting Shimla, where the downpour over the past 24 hours has caused significant disruption. Numerous trees have been uprooted due to the relentless rain, with one falling on the Information and Public Relations Office in Chhota Shimla, causing partial damage.

The local weather center in Shimla recorded 41 mm of rainfall during this period. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning for various parts of Himachal Pradesh for the next 24 hours.

IMD Himachal Pradesh chief, Dr. Kuldeep Srivastava, reportedly noted that heavy rains are expected in the Kullu, Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi districts. Although the monsoon in the state is currently 30% below average, August rainfall remains normal.

In response to the ongoing weather conditions, the Shimla district administration held an emergency meeting on August 21 to address road restoration and other critical issues. Geological experts are increasingly concerned about the growing number of landslides and land subsidence in Shimla.

Dr. SS Randhawa, Principal Scientist at the Centre for Climate Change, Department of Environment, Science, and Technology, Government of Himachal Pradesh, emphasized the importance of controlling surface water to prevent further soil saturation and mitigate risks in the sinking areas of the city. Dr. Randhawa also stressed the need for a comprehensive plan to guide Shimla's future development, particularly in light of the recent landslides and last year’s floods.
