Chandigarh to Open Jail for Rehabilitation of Prisoners latest news: Chandigarh Police is thinking of opening an open jail, as some other Indian states have done, to give prisoners a free and more rehabilitative atmosphere. Open jails, which are becoming popular all over India, are intended to assist prisoners in their reintegration into society by giving them a chance to work and live with their families.
The Chandigarh administration has already sent the proposal for an open jail to the administration. In recent times, officials from the Burail Jail had visited a successful open jail in Rajasthan to learn from its operations. The Chandigarh administration will replicate the Rajasthan model once it receives approval, inspired by the Rajasthan model.
There are about 91 open jails now in 17 states of India. These provide opportunities for inmates to work in the outside world during the daytime and return at night. Open jails are set up to confine prisoners possessing special skills and good conduct history, allowing them to contribute to society while under imprisonment.
The new open jail to service Chandigarh is likely to adopt the successful example of Rajasthan's Open Jail at Sanganer. The location of the facility is also being considered by the administration. Once approved, it would be an important step towards the modernization of the prison system and rehabilitation of prisoners.
