CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline to September 15, 2025 for 2025-26
The extension comes in light of extensive structural and content revisions made to the ITR forms for AY 2025-26.
CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline to September 15, 2025 for 2025-26 latest news: ITR Return Filing Deadline Latest News Today: In a significant relief to taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. The original deadline of July 31, 2025, has now been pushed to September 15, 2025.
The extension comes in light of extensive structural and content revisions made to the ITR forms for AY 2025-26. These revisions are part of a broader initiative to simplify tax compliance, enhance transparency, and improve the accuracy of income reporting.
According to the official press release, the changes have required more time for system development, utility integration, and testing. Additionally, credits from TDS statements—scheduled to be filed by May 31, 2025—are only expected to be reflected in early June, further narrowing the effective window for filing returns under the previous deadline.
"To ensure system readiness and a smooth rollout of the new utilities, it has been decided to extend the due date," the release stated.
The move is also aimed at addressing concerns from stakeholders and giving taxpayers adequate time to adapt to the new filing requirements. A formal notification confirming the extension to September 15, 2025, will be issued separately.
This development is expected to ensure greater accuracy and integrity in the return filing process while facilitating a more convenient experience for filers.
