Fraudsters Steal Rs 57 Lakh from TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee's Account to Purchase Ornaments and More; Here's How It Happened

Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee on Sunday revealed that fraudsters had accessed his dormant State Bank of India (SBI) account and stolen Rs 57 lakh.

Speaking to ANI about the incident, Banerjee said he was informed by the manager of SBI’s High Court branch that someone had reactivated his dormant account and opened a demat account to transfer the money.

“I was informed by the SBI High Court branch manager that during my time as an MLA, I had an account there which became dormant after 10–12 years of inactivity. Now, someone has superimposed my picture, used a fake Aadhaar and PAN card for KYC, reactivated the account, changed my mobile number and email ID, opened a demat account using my details, and transferred Rs 57 lakh into it within five days,” the MP told PTI.

He added, “The money was then withdrawn and used for online purchases of ornaments and other items.”

Banerjee said the matter will now be investigated by the police.
