Indian E-Commerce Firm Meesho Gets Rs 1,500 Crore Tax Demand, Challenges Notice
Meesho, the Indian e-commerce platform founded in 2015, has announced that it will legally challenge a nearly Rs 1,500 crore income tax demand raised by the Income Tax Department for the assessment year 2023–24.
The company disclosed in a regulatory filing that it received the notice on March 6. The department’s assessment unit has proposed additions and adjustments to Meesho’s declared income, bringing the total demand, including interest, to Rs 1,499.73 crore.
According to Meesho, the company disagrees with the observations made in the assessment and is reviewing the order. It added that it believes there are sufficient legal and factual grounds to contest the notice and will take all necessary steps to protect its interests.
The platform also highlighted that a similar tax demand was raised for the assessment year 2022–23. That case is currently pending before the Karnataka High Court, which granted an interim stay on April 17, 2025.
Despite the sizable demand, Meesho stated that it continues to operate normally and the latest notice is not expected to have a significant impact on its financial position, operations, or ongoing business activities.
