Google Maps AI Update: ‘Ask Maps’ Feature and 3D Navigation Powered by Gemini
Google is introducing new artificial intelligence capabilities to Google Maps, aiming to make trip planning and navigation more interactive for users.
The update uses Gemini, the company’s latest AI technology, to offer smarter recommendations and visual guidance while travelling.
A key addition is a conversational tool called Ask Maps, which allows users to search for places by asking detailed questions. With the feature, people can request suggestions such as quiet cafés nearby, locations to charge a phone, or guidance for planning a road trip that includes multiple stops.
Google said the AI responses will rely on information drawn from more than 300 million mapped locations worldwide as well as reviews and updates contributed by over 500 million users.
The company is first rolling out Ask Maps on the Google Maps mobile app for Android and iPhone users in India and the United States. Support for desktop users and additional countries is expected to follow later.
Alongside this, Google is introducing a new Immersive Navigation experience for drivers. The feature generates a three-dimensional preview of routes, showing nearby buildings, road dividers and surrounding terrain to help drivers better understand the road ahead.
It can also compare different routes to the same destination and suggest convenient parking spots after arrival.
