Srinagar: A large number of people from all age groups today thronged the Boulevard road on the banks of the Dal Lake to participate in ‘Marathon-2017’ .

Srinagar: A large number of people from all age groups today thronged the Boulevard road on the banks of the Dal Lake to participate in ‘Marathon-2017’ .

The marathon was held under five categories. It was flagged off by Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid. Nearly 3,000 people had registered themselves for the ‘Run for peace’ event. The excitement was visible on the faces of participants before the marathon began.

“I have been preparing for the marathon and I hope to do well in the race,” said a participant Abrar from Budgam. “These events should be a regular feature in Kashmir,” he added.

In the full marathon for men, Tahir Aziz, a resident of Kupwara, bagged the first prize. He was rewarded Rs 25,000. In the full marathon for paramilitary and police personnel, senior grade constable Riyaz Ahmed of the J&K Police won the first prize.

Majid Ashraf Ganai of Anantnag stood first in the half marathon for men’s category. In the half marathon for paramilitary and police personnel, Imtyaz Ahmed Dar of the J&K Police won the first prize.

In the half marathon of women, Ashifa Shafi of Srinagar stood first while Ifshan Ahmed of Narbal won the first prize in the 8-km marathon for boys under 14. Under the category of 6-km marathon for girls under 14, Sakeen Rashid of Budgam won the first prize. State Minister for Social Welfare and Science and Technology Sajjad Gani Lone and Chief Secretary BB Vyas distributed prizes among the winners on the occasion.
