Srinagar: After the killing of three militants in an encounter in Sopore, the authorities closed all educational institutions in Baramulla district today. Officials said due to the recent spate of protests in schools and colleges, these were closed as a precautionary measure.

Following the killings, protests erupted in many places in north Kashmir, forcing the closure of educational institutions in Handwara, Hajin and Sumbal areas of north Kashmir.

Education in Kashmir has been on the edge for more than a year now. The government is time and again closing the schools to prevent law and order problems.

The parents of students have expressed their concern over the closure of educational institutions by the government saying it had given a huge setback to the education of children who had not been able to attend their classes regularly which had affected their future prospects.

“The government always talks about education in Kashmir but now it is closing schools every now and then. Where is their concern now?” said Shakeel Ahmad, a resident of Srinagar.
