Chandigarh: Leaders of opposition parties today demanded the resignation of state BJP president Subhash Barala following the arrest of his son for stalking a girl in Chandigarh last night. They also ridiculed the BJP’s “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” campaign.
Abhay Singh Chautala, Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, said the BJP should sack Barala from the party president’s post if it has any respect for people’s concerns. His tweet in Hindi, inter alia, says, “A political party, the state president’s son of which, has been arrested trying to kidnap a girl last midnight, talks of Beti Bachao”.
State Congress president Ashok Tanwar termed it as a serious matter and said the government must ensure that the police were not pressured. “Incidents of harassment and exploitation of women have increased during the BJP regime and the government has been unable to protect women,” he alleged. Leaders of the opposition parties in Barala’s Assembly constituency Tohana in Fatehabad, too, condemned the incident and demanded his resignation.
Nishan Singh, a former INLD legislator from Tohana, said Barala has lost the right to remain BJP president and he must resign. Meanwhile, the BJP issued a statement on Barala’s behalf that, “Like every Indian citizen, I respect the law of the land. I am confident that the law will take its own course and the matter will be investigated impartially”.
