Rewari: The body of an international hockey player, Jyoti Gupta (21) of Sonepat, was found under mysterious circumstances near the Jhajjar railway overbridge on the Rewari-Rohtak railway line here last night.

While the GRP, treating it as a case of suicide, has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the family, suspecting foul play, has sought a probe.

Jyoti was part of the Indian hockey team that played in the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati in 2016. She was among the Indian team probables for an upcoming international event.

“Around 9 pm, we got information that a girl had committed suicide by jumping in front of the Jaipur-Chandigarh Intercity Express. We visited the scene and informed her parents through a mobile phone recovered from the scene. The body was shifted to the civil hospital for a post-mortem,” said Ranbir Singh, in-charge of the GRP station, Rewari. A board of doctors performed the post-mortem, after which the body was handed over to the family today.

Singh said it was a case of suicide as the engine driver, Vikrant, claimed he saw her jump in front of the train. Vikrant informed the station superintendent, who later called the police.

Victim’s mother Babli Devi, however, claimed her daughter left Sonepat for MD University in Rohtak on Wednesday morning to get the spelling of her name rectified in her certificates.

“I talked to Jyoti over the phone around 5 pm and she said she would reach Sonepat within an hour. Her cell phone was switched off when I tried calling her up around 7 pm. Later, we got the tragic news,” she added.

“How did she reach Rewari from Rohtak? My daughter cannot commit suicide. She has been murdered. The police should probe the case thoroughly,” she demanded.

Jyoti’s father Pramod Gupta said she was to attend a national camp in Bengaluru next month.
