Chandigarh: Haryana government on Wednesday ordered a probe into the 'veil controversy' which put the state government in the dock after the issue hogged limelight.

Haryana Public Relations, Art & Cultural Affairs, Women & Child Development Minister Kavita Jain while speaking on the controversy said a departmental probe has been ordered to fix the responsibility of the officials responsible for the publication of the controversial photograph and its caption.

"The issue has been brought to the notice of the government and I have ordered a probe. Why this photograph was used on the cover of the magazine and what was the motive behind writing such a caption," Kavita Jain said.

When asked why the post of the editor of Haryana Samwad, a monthly magazine published by the state Public Relations Department , on whose cover page the photograph of a veiled woman was carried with a caption "Ghoonghat Ki Aan Baan, Mahare Hariyana Ki Pahchaan", the minister said the magazine was discontinued due to a distribution problem and the probe will also find out the reason behind the failure.

When questioned that the role of state's Public Relations was to promote state's initiatives like Beti Bachaao, Beti Padhao and not to glorify the veil, the minister said it was not justified to judge the mindset of the state government merely on the basis of a caption.

"We do not favour a veil nor we endorse it. It has been part of  state's tradition for a long time but now state's daughters have carved out a niche for themselves in various fields like sports and beauty," Kavita Jain said.
