Kurukshetra: Kurukshetra,: More than 200 farmers courted arrest at Pipli today to press the Centre for the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report. The protest remained peaceful and vehicular traffic on various roads remained unaffected. Sources said the protesters were taken to the Yamunanagar district prison.
A large number of farmers from six districts gathered at the new grain market at Pipli. Gurnam Singh Charuni, farmer rights activist, lamented the BJP government for overlooking the hardships of the farming community.
He said the Centre was framing policies to benefit the corporate houses. The farmer leader said the BJP had refused to implement a key electoral promise of accepting all recommendations of the Swaminathan panel for the financial improvement of farmers. Charuni said the volunteers would continue court arrest till August 14.
