Punjab Government Launches Subsidies to Boost Alternative Agriculture Practices

Special Subsidy Programs for Maize, Sugarcane, Cotton, and Vegetables

Chandigarh: The Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is taking significant steps to conserve underground water resources and promote alternative farming practices. These initiatives aim to help farmers shift away from traditional crop cycles, particularly those dominated by paddy cultivation, and adopt more sustainable and diverse agricultural practices.

To support this transition, the state government is offering special subsidies and facilities for crops like maize, sugarcane, cotton, and vegetables. Additionally, there are also incentives for agricultural auxiliary occupations such as animal husbandry, fish farming, and shrimp farming.

As part of this drive, a new scheme has been introduced, offering farmers Rs 17,500 per hectare for adopting alternative farming methods. For the year 2024-2025, a budget of Rs 289.87 crore has been allocated to support these efforts, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable agriculture.

The Punjab government’s new agricultural policy draft emphasizes the importance of diversifying crops to preserve groundwater. Instead of paddy, farmers are being encouraged to grow fruits, vegetables, and establish herbal kitchen gardens. These initiatives are designed to foster long-term sustainability and benefit both farmers and the environment.

By promoting alternative farming methods, the Punjab government aims to protect natural resources while ensuring better livelihoods for farmers across the state.
