Farmer Unions Organize Statewide Protests Against Police Actions

Farmer Unions Organize Statewide Protests Against Police Actions: Farmer unions in Punjab have called statewide protests on March 28, against police actions against farmers by the Punjab government. Protests will be held outside the offices of Deputy Commissioners in all districts. It is the first big protest since the 2020-21 Delhi border agitation against the now-repealed farm laws.

In another appeal for unity, a meeting under the "Sadbhavna Ekta" banner is planned for March 27 at 10 AM at Gurdwara Nathana Sahib, Jandmangoli village, Patiala. The rally is intended to bring people together against government repression.

Tajveer Singh, a key farmer leader, said, "The government is attempting to create fear, but we will react with determination and unity. The March 28 protest will give a strong message that farmers will not retreat."

The Shambhu border protest, initiated on February 13, 2024, was tear-gassed and broken up by police on March 19, 2025, after a 401-day agitation came to an end. Farmers have been agitating for legal assurances regarding the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and waiver of loans.

The protest plans were finalised in a meeting of the six-member unity committee of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) in Barnala. SKM has also issued a call for a countrywide anti-repression movement, calling upon outfits such as the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and SKM (Non-Political) to join.

While protests have increased in SKM (Non-Political) leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal's village Dallewal, he is currently on the 120th day of hunger strike. The farmers of Dallewal pledged to intensify their agitation till arrested farmers were freed.
