The recent spell of winter rain across the region has triggered a mixed response from the farming community, ending a prolonged dry spell during December and January. While the rainfall is being hailed as a "boon" for wheat and fruit crops, farmers growing vegetables like potatoes and tomatoes are concerned due to reports of strong winds and hailstorms.
According to the report, the rain has provided much-needed soil moisture, which is highly beneficial for wheat growth following a rise in day temperatures. However, Sandeep Singh Grewal, Deputy Director of Horticulture, said that the rain might delay the ongoing potato harvest.
A significant portion of the potato crop had already been harvested after weather warnings were issued. For tomato growers, the main concern remains the risk of "late blight" and damage to young seedlings in areas where hail was reported.
Chief Agriculture Officer Jaswinder Singh confirmed that the rain is conducive for wheat but cautioned farmers to stay vigilant. The department is currently assessing the extent of damage in hailstorm-affected areas. Vegetable farmers have been advised to stay vigilant, as high humidity and moisture can trigger crop diseases.
