Farmer Leaders Urge PM Modi to Act, Save Life of Jagjit Singh Dallewal
Farmer leaders agreed to hold another coordination meeting on January 18 at Patran to discuss future actions jointly.
Farmers Protest Latest News: Farmer leaders from various organizations have collectively appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate discussions and take immediate action to save the life of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a farmer leader on a fast-unto-death for the past 49 days.
The call for unity emerged during a successful coordination meeting of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), SKM (Non-Political), and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) held in Patran near Punjab's Khanauri border. The meeting was marked by a spirit of collaboration and shared concern over corporate influences on agriculture, allegedly backed by the NDA-3 government.
United Front Against Challenges
Key developments from the meeting included a visit by members of the Six-Member Committee and other SKM leaders to meet Dallewal at the Khanauri Border and Shambu Border on January 10. The meeting also followed the symbolic burning of copies of the National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing on January 13, which served as a bold message of solidarity to farmers nationwide.
The leaders emphasized that public criticisms between platforms and kisan organizations would cease, with differences to be resolved internally within the coordination system. They also agreed to hold another coordination meeting on January 18 at Patran to discuss future actions jointly.
Demands and Concerns
In their joint statement, the leaders urged the Prime Minister to immediately engage in discussions with farmer organizations to address their genuine demands. These include the implementation of the December 9, 2021 agreement made between SKM and the NDA-2 government.
The farmer leaders highlighted the urgency of saving Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s life, who has endured nearly 50 days of fasting in protest.
