Who is Harjeet Singh Laddi, the Assailant Behind Kapil Sharma’s Cafe Firing?
Khalistani terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi, a most-wanted individual on India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) list, has claimed responsibility for the recent firing incident at comedian Kapil Sharma’s Cafe in Canada, India Today has reported.
Kapil Sharma’s café, named Kap’s Cafe, was recently opened in Surrey, Canada. The comedian and his wife Ginni Chatrath Sharma had shared reels from the Cafe on their Instagram stories following its grand opening.
However, just days after the inauguration, the Cafe was attacked by unidentified assailants who fired 12 rounds at the premises, causing property damage.
"On Thursday, July 10, at 1:50 a.m., Surrey Police Service was called to a business located in the 8400 block of 120 Street for a report of shots fired," the Surrey Police Service said in an official statement.
The shooting occurred while staff members were still present, but there were no casualties or injuries, the police confirmed.
According to India Today, Harjeet Singh Laddi is a Canada-based operative affiliated with the banned terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). He is currently listed on the NIA’s most-wanted list.
Laddi is also the prime accused in the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Vikas Prabhakar, who was assassinated in Nangal, Punjab, in June 2024.
Following Prabhakar’s killing, the NIA launched an investigation that uncovered a larger conspiracy involving Laddi, Kulbir Singh alias Sidhu, and other operatives. As the probe deepened, the NIA placed Laddi on its most-wanted list and announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for any information leading to his arrest.
The report also sheds light on the possible motive behind the attack on Kapil Sharma’s new venture. Citing sources, India Today stated that in a past episode of The Kapil Sharma Show, a character allegedly made humorous remarks about the “dress and behavior of Nihang Singhs.” These comments were reportedly perceived as mocking Sikh religious values and hurting the sentiments of the community.
In a related development, India Today reported that Mumbai Police visited Kapil Sharma’s residence. However, it remains unclear whether the visit was for security reasons or related to another purpose.
