Chardham Yatra Halted for 2 Days Amid Heavy Rain in Uttarakhand

Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers reach warning levels in Rudraprayag; administration issues high alert for residents.

Rain has continued across all districts of Uttarakhand since late last night. In Dehradun's Nanda Ki Chowki, a large pothole formed on the road leading to the new bridge, affecting the Vikasnagar-Paonta road, which was restored within an hour on the directions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. In the Nathuwala area, rainwater entered more than 100 homes.

Landslides have occurred in Chamoli, Tehri, Uttarkashi, and Rudraprayag. The Badrinath Highway at Kanchanla, the Kedarnath Highway between Kund-Kakra, and the Sonprayag-Gaurikund road remain closed due to debris. Near Bhandar village on the Dehradun-Mussoorie road, drains are overflowing with rainwater.

The Garhwal Divisional Commissioner said that due to landslide warnings and heavy rain on pilgrimage routes, the Chardham Yatra has been suspended for two days, today and tomorrow, for the safety of pilgrims. It will resume once weather conditions improve.

In Rudraprayag, the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers have reached warning levels. The administration has issued a high alert and is making loudspeaker announcements in riverside areas, instructing people to move to safer locations. Meanwhile, in Fatehpur, Nainital, two people were swept into the fast-flowing Bhakra drain but managed to swim to safety.
