Hamirpur Police Arrest Chitta Supplier From Kharar, Probe Drug Trafficking Network

SP Hamirpur says the crackdown continues as police trace contacts linked to the Mohali-Chandigarh drug route.

Police have made a significant breakthrough in a heroin ("chitta") trafficking case that surfaced in Bhota, Hamirpur district, on July 25. Taking the investigation forward, Sadar police station arrested Balwinder, the accused supplier, from Kharar in Mohali. Police are now working to trace others linked to the wider network, with the investigation still ongoing.

According to officials, on July 25, acting on a tip-off, police from Hamirpur police station conducted a search operation in the Bhota area, intercepting a taxi parked on a road leading toward a village near PHC Bhota. During the search, police recovered 5.40 grams of heroin from the vehicle. Two young men — Vikas Kumar, a resident of Baroti, and Nikhil, a resident of Saur — were arrested on the spot, with a case registered against them under the NDPS Act.

During police remand, interrogation of the accused led to key revelations. It emerged that the recovered heroin had been brought from the Mohali-Chandigarh region. Based on this information, police carried out further technical verification and investigation, ultimately arresting the accused supplier, Balwinder, from Kharar.

Police said the accused is currently being questioned to determine who else may be involved in the illegal trade. Investigating agencies are examining the accused's contacts, mobile records, and the broader drug trafficking network in an effort to identify and arrest other individuals connected to the racket.

SP Hamirpur Balbir Singh Thakur said Sadar police achieved a major breakthrough in the heroin trafficking case registered in Bhota on July 25. He said interrogation revealed that the drugs had been procured from the Mohali-Chandigarh region, based on which police acted and arrested local supplier Balwinder. He added that all individuals linked to the network are being identified, and anyone found involved in the trafficking will face strict legal action. He further stated that the district police are running a continuous crackdown against drug trafficking and that no accused would be spared.
