Tax authorities urged remaining taxpayers to complete their submissions immediately through an official message on social media platform X.
The Income Tax Department announced on Friday that over five point five crore Income Tax Returns have been successfully submitted for Assessment Year 2026-27. The official update comes as the statutory deadline for filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 forms arrives on July 31, 2026, marking a major milestone in national tax compliance.
Filing activity witnessed a dramatic surge in the final hours preceding the deadline. More than forty two lakh returns were processed on July 30 alone, reflecting intense last minute activity among salaried taxpayers and individual filers across the country.
Tax authorities urged remaining taxpayers to complete their submissions immediately through an official message on social media platform X. Officials reminded citizens that fewer than twenty four hours remain before the cutoff, encouraging filers to submit returns promptly to avoid statutory late penalties.
Form ITR-1, known as Sahaj, caters to resident individuals earning up to fifty lakh rupees annually from salary, one house property, and agricultural income up to five thousand rupees. Conversely, Form ITR-2 applies to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families reporting capital gains.
The Income Tax Department continues monitoring portal infrastructure to ensure smooth processing as taxpayers complete compliance obligations before the official July 31 deadline concludes tonight.
