Electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ather Energy announced the launch of its innovative Pothole+ Alerts feature, designed to warn scooter riders about upcoming road hazards. The new safety tool informs commuters about potholes, broken road patches, uneven surfaces, and speed breakers while navigating.

The feature is powered by Ather's proprietary road intelligence system, which aggregates real-time telemetry from thousands of connected vehicles. Compatible models include Gen 2 and above electric scooters, specifically the Ather 450 Apex, 450X, and Rizta Z. Riders can view alerts directly on their dashboard or listen through connected audio devices.

Ather Energy co-founder and chief executive officer Tarun Mehta revealed on social media platform X that developing this technology took nearly nine years. Mehta explained that the primary hurdle was not software design, but gathering a sufficiently massive dataset from connected scooters traveling identical routes daily across urban India.

Every Ather scooter comes equipped with onboard compute processors and cellular connectivity, allowing the company to continuously record spatial data over millions of kilometers. This collective intelligence forms the backbone of the mapping engine, delivering proactive warnings before riders encounter dangerous surface conditions.

Looking ahead, Ather plans to expand its road intelligence platform beyond simple alerts. The EV manufacturer intends to utilize this crowdsourced mapping network to recommend smoother alternative navigation routes, marking a major advancement for smart urban mobility across Indian cities.
