Bihar Assembly Adjourned Amid Uproar Over Patna Protests

Speaker Prem Kumar adjourns House till 2 pm as BJP, JD(U) members confront opposition MLAs amid fears of physical clash

Members of the ruling NDA stormed into the Well on Thursday, minutes after the day's proceedings had started, accusing the opposition of being responsible for the violent students' demonstration in the state capital the day before. As a result, the Bihar parliament was adjourned till 2 pm.

Fearing a confrontation within the House after BJP members Sanjeev Chaurasia and Vinay Bihari, along with JD(U) member Manjeet Singh, were spotted menacingly approaching the opposition MLAs, Speaker Prem Kumar postponed the proceedings until lunch.

The NDA lawmakers were heard accusing "goons, not students" of participating in the "so-called protests" on Wednesday, the day after at least 22 police officers were hurt in a fierce skirmish that culminated in a climactic confrontation near the Chief Minister's home.

"The BJP and its allies have not learned their lessons despite seeing so much public anger," opposition MLAs led by Alok Mehta of the RJD told reporters as they emerged from the House following its adjournment. They claimed that the demonstrators were thugs, even though their own behavior today was appropriate for thugs. For our lives, we had to flee.
Ram Kripal Yadav, a minister and leader of the BJP, insisted, "The Congress-led opposition is trying to plunge the country into anarchy." Yesterday, anti-social individuals disguised as students battled with police, assaulted media, and even physically assaulted a few of our fellow MLAs in Patna, demonstrating the evil scheme. The miscreants will be found and prosecuted by the government.

Notably, at least two BJP MLAs, Vinay Bihari and Rohit Pandey, were attacked by the protesters who had spotted them heading for the assembly inside their cars. Following the conclusion of the proceedings, the Vidhan Sabha's gates were sealed, and lawmakers, journalists, and other employees were still confined inside because the security personnel were afraid that some of the demonstrators, who were all calling for the resignation of Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan in support of the ongoing agitation in Delhi, might storm the building.

In the meantime, chaotic events were also observed within the legislative council following Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh's rejection of an adjournment motion made by Abdul Bari Siddiqui of the RJD. The chairman adjourned the meeting till 2:30 pm after many opposition MLCs hurried into the Well.
