Tom Holland's fourth outing as Spider-Man rewrites the record books at the North American box office.

At the box office, Spider-Man outperformed the Avengers. With USD 360 million in ticket sales from US and Canadian theaters, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" surpassed "Avengers: Endgame" as the largest opening weekend in North America, according to Sony Pictures.

Sony predicted on Sunday that "Spider-Man" would make an estimated USD 355 million over its opening weekend in 4,487 theaters, narrowly missing the USD 357 million record set by "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019. However, the fourth Spider-Man film, featuring Tom Holland, performed better than anticipated on Sunday and ultimately won. Tom Rothman, the chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, said in a statement on Monday, “records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”

Before “Avengers: Endgame”, no movie had opened over USD 300 million domestically. The previous record holders were “Avengers: Infinity War”, which launched with USD 257 million in 2018, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (USD 247 million in 2015). The third Holland Spider-Man film, "No Way Home," debuted at USD 260 million and went on to earn USD 1.9 billion worldwide during the pandemic in December 2021.

A record-breaking weekend for US and Canadian movie theaters was also fueled by the lucrative pairing of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey," which both star Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal. With nearly $6.2 billion in ticket sales thus far, the domestic box office is up more than 15% from the previous year, according to Rentrak.
