At least 12 people were killed and several others injured after a train collided with a passenger bus at a railway level crossing in Cumilla, according to News On Air, citing officials.

The accident occurred at Padua Bazar crossing along the busy Dhaka–Chattogram highway, when a Dhaka-bound train struck a bus that had entered the tracks.

Citing police, the report said the impact left the bus mangled, dragging it nearly half a kilometre before the train came to a halt.

Several injured passengers were rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for treatment. Train movement on the Dhaka–Chattogram route remained suspended for about three hours following the incident.

Multiple probe committees have been formed to investigate the accident, with a focus on potential negligence and safety lapses at the level crossing. Two gatemen have already been suspended, the report added.

The government has announced financial assistance of 1 lakh taka each for the families of the deceased.
